The PhD scholarships support highly qualified junior academics from the historical sciences with excellent academic standing and brilliant examination results who show unusual promise for their doctoral theses. Applications can be submitted at any time, independent of the candidate's nationality or place of work. Scholarship holders receive a monthly base amount of EUR 1,600. There are additional benefits, such as allowances for accompanying children or, i.e., to cover printing costs, if necessary. Please note that income from employment and scholarship income are mutually exclusive. The funding will be awarded over a period of two years.

Research projects in the following subject areas are given funding priority:
- historical sciences
- historical islamic studies
- history of art
- history of law
- prehistory and early history
- history of science
admission to doctoral studies. The overall master grade awarded must be at least 1.5 or above in Germany (comparable with grade A in other countries). For candidates with a foreign degree, a special examination for inclusion in the selection process will be performed in the Foundation's office. The final grade achieved in legal exams also will likewise be assessed separately.
Number of Scholarships
About 13.5% of the applicants are awarded scholarships.
two years with the option to extend the funding, if the scholar becomes a parent during the allowance period and is therefore entitled to maternity and/or parental leave
- scholarship base amount: EUR 1,600 per month
- standard foreign residence allowance: EUR 400 per month
- travel allowance: as required
- material costs: as required
- family allowance, if applicable: EUR 400 for scholars with one child, EUR 500 for two children or EUR +100 for more children
